Sin Ming Sing Cantonese Opera Centre and Hong Kong’s Choi Seen Production will be jointly organizing a talk-cum-demonstration by Cantonese opera female impersonator, Mr Zhao Zhenyu, on Saturday, 18 August 2007 at 3 pm. The venue for this event is the Exhibition Hall on Level 1 at the Kreta Ayer CC.
Zhao Zhenyu was recently invited by the Kreta Ayer People’s Theatre Foundation to perform in the “Singapore Arts Festival 2007 Cantonese Opera Performance” together with the Guangzhou Hongdou Cantonese Opera Troupe & guest artistes from Guangdong & Hong Kong.
Zhao started his artistic pursuits as a key member in Hong Kong's theatre groups, and as a singer who has cut four albums. In 2005, he became a Cantonese opera female impersonator in an unexpected encounter with this traditional art. His passion as a male ‘hua dan’ blossomed tremendously and in no time his first Cantonese opera charity concert was held in Guangzhou in September last year. The concert was well-received, thus inspiring Zhao to hold his second concert in Guangzhou this January. His impersonation drew applause and recognition from the audience of a city where female impersonation has not existed for many years.
Following his trail of concerts, Zhao invited Cantonese opera celebrities, namely, Mr Leong Yew Onn, Mr Au Hoi Ming and Mdm Loh Chau Ping to partner him in duets. These new duets were recorded in 3 Cantonese opera albums which were best sellers of the production company. In April this year, Zhao was presented with the “Golden Album” award in recognition of the rocketing sales.
In his Singapore performance last month, Zhao presented one of the duets with Hong Kong’s famous artistes, Hong Hoi, and a spectacular solo excerpt “Blossoms from the Fairy”. His meticulous singing and performance were truly stunning.
In his forthcoming visit to Singapore as the speaker of his talk-cum-demonstration, Zhao will share his thoughts, insights and vision from the angle as a female impersonator. He has also planned to present his latest theatrical photos as souvenirs to one and all at the talk. Mr Ling Dongming, the artistic director of Sin Ming Sing Cantonese Opera Centre will chair this event. Zhao and Ling will also present Cantonese opera arias at the event.
